I own land and spend a lot of time in SE Missouri. Beautiful place. We sometimes go through a town called Old Mines, in Washington County. Very French town. There are even a couple speakers of the old creole language. A lot of French town names around there too. It's a great area of the country to just drive and explore, if you've never been.

One little tidbit about the Ozarks is Blanchard Springs Caverns, the only cave system owned and operated by the US Forest Service. Located in 56, Arkansas. No. That isn't a typo. The town is actually named 56. It really is a wonderful cave and since the US Forest Service isn't allowed to advertise, I'd encourage you all to visit there.

I’m a St. Louisan who spent my youth in the Ozarks on float trips, camping, on the lake, road trips. I went off and joined the Army and lived all over. Came back to St. Louis for a few years and always felt the calling to go back to the Ozarks. A couple years ago I moved to a tiny town of 345 in the St. Francois mountains. I’m at the age where unnecessary noise pisses me off, so I absolutely love it here. I’m a 5 minute walk to Big Creek and a 5 minute SxS ride to the Black River(which I grew up floating). It’s one of my favorite places on earth and I feel blessed to call this beautiful land my home. If you haven’t been, do yourself the favor of visiting. The people are wonderful, the scenery is majestic, and the food is country down home good.

Great presentation! Interestingly (as you mentioned) Nashville was not an organic unspring of the music industry. Early labels, particularly RCA had chosen Bristol, TN as the proposed location for bluegrass, even setting up facilities there. At some point it was obviously realized the convenience of finding an urban headquarters halfway between the Appalachians and Ozarks. This also gave access to delta blues, dixieland and western folk & swing. These distinct genres would inevitably and sadly homogenize into what is now simply referred to as "country" and lose their cultural identities.
